It’s no secret that gas costs are high, and many myths abound related to gas mileage and ways to save. But how many of them are actually true? Here’s a breakdown of the most common myths (and facts) about gas mileage.

Myth: Idling uses less gas than starting the engine.

Fact: New-age stop-and-start engines are a testament to the fact that turning over your engine again does not in fact use more gas than idling the engine. Save on fuel, and turn it off whenever you can.

Myth: Roll up your windows to save gas.

Fact: While running the air conditioning will absolutely draw more power from your engine and affect your gas mileage, there are no studies prove the drag from having your windows open dips into fuel economy.

Myth: Over-inflating my tires helps to save gas.

Fact: It’s never a good idea to overinflate your tires. The best way to get the most out of your fuel tank is to make sure your tires are inflated to the correct PSI—no more, no less.

Myth: A little extra cargo weight won’t make a difference in gas mileage.

Fact: While a few pounds here and there won’t change things, as much as 100 pounds of extra weight can actually affect your fuel economy.

Myth: Premium fuel gives you better gas mileage.

Fact: Using premium fuel on a vehicle that’s not designed for it will have little to no difference in gas mileage—and with the added cost, it’s usually a net loss. Stick to the type of fuel specified in your vehicle’s manual for best results.
