Toyota makes some of the safest and most reliable vehicles on the road. Part of keeping your Toyota car, truck, or SUV running at its top performance is scheduling routine preventative maintenance—including service for your Toyota tires. Here’s what you need to know to keep your tires healthy and keep your Toyota out of the shop.

What Should the Air Pressure Be in My Tires?

In general, the optimal air pressure for road-safe vehicle tires is between 32 and 36 PSI. However, this might vary a bit depending on your make and model, so be sure to check your owner’s manual or contact Heritage Toyota Harrisburg to find out the ideal tire pressure for your vehicle.

How Deep Should My Tire Treads Be?

New tires generally come with treads that are about 10/32-inch or 11/32-inch deep. Once your tires wear down to about 4/32-inch, it’s time to plan for new tires.

If you don’t have a ruler handy to measure your treads, try the old penny test. Hold a penny with Lincoln’s head pointing down into the tread. If the top of his head is showing, you need new tires.

How Long do Tires Generally Last?

Most tires last about six years or 50,000 miles. However, if you drive on rough terrain instead of well-paved roads, your tires will need to be replaced more frequently. You can also help increase your tires’ lifespans by having your tires rotated every 5,000 miles or so.

How do I Know When it’s Time to Replace My Tires?

There are a few indications that you need new tires. Check for the following symptoms:

  • The tire treads are less than 4/32-inch deep
  • You see cracks or bulges on your tires
  • Your Toyota’s Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) comes on
  • Your vehicle shakes or loses traction when you drive

What Kind of Tires Should I Put on My Toyota?

When you put new tires on your Toyota, you need to make sure you use the right size for your vehicle and are optimal for your area’s climate and terrain. And because not all tires are created equal, we recommend using one of the following brands:

  • BF Goodrich
  • Bridgestone
  • Dunlop
  • Goodyear
  • Michelin
  • Yokohama
